This course will introduce participants to the basic principles of integrative medicine and current best practices and research on the application of the arts in healthcare and mind-body medicine. This course will clarify the similarities and differences among the various roles of child life specialist, artist-in-residence, arts facilitator, and expressive arts therapists (art, dance, poetry, drama, dance and expressive arts). provides an intensive, hands-on experience with a variety of expressive arts activities as part of an integrative approach to healthcare across the lifespan (children, adolescents, adults, older adults) to support health and well-being. Models for integrative healthcare and application of the arts are presented with an emphasis on both mind-body principles and health psychology. Participants will engage in visual arts, music, play and other arts-based approaches that support stress reduction,mindfulness, resilience, post-traumatic growth and positivity and explore how these approaches can be applied to healthcare settings. Finally, using arts-based, mind-body practices are offered as methods for self-care in healthcare, allied health and mental health practitioners.
